Building up Heelwork

Do you have a young dog or are you new to obedience and want to build up the heelwork right from the start? Our course gives you a step by step guide how to build up the heelwork for FCI obedience.

For sure we don't have perfect heelwork and both we and our dogs make mistakes! Over the years we have gained a lot of experience (not only from our own dogs but also from many others we have trained) and developed our own way. As always, the priority is a dog who understands what we want and has fun doing it.

Course content
We work using a target and you will have the choice between using the hand or an object target. We think the object target offers some advantages over the hand target for FCI type heelwork. Firstly it allows the left arm and shoulder to move freely and naturally from the start, which is after all the aim of FCI heelwork. In addition you can go back to using the object target even after you have taken it away, for example if you need to remind the dog of his position or want to work on technical details like backwards steps for example. Finally if you have a small dog its kinder on your back!

Using detailed notes and videos we will show in this course how to:
  • build up the target
  • work on trotting under the target
  • bring the dog to the leg
  • get rid of the target
  • train slow and fast pace
  • teach the dog exactly what his position should be.

The course is suitable for:
  • Young dogs from 6 months
  • Anyone coming new to obedience
  • Teams who want to invest time in rebuilding their heelwork
  • Teams who have already started working with hand or object target and need more help.
